5.25.16 –Outdoor Air Pollution Spikes Heart Disease Risk
A University of Washington Health Sciences study reports that “people living in areas with more outdoor pollution —even at lower levels common in the United States — accumulate deposits in the arteries that supply the heart faster than do people living in less polluted areas. “
The UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences tested over 6,000 people in nine states during the 10-year Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air). Yesterday, The Lancet, the United Kingdom’s premier medical journal, published the study.
The US Environmental Protection Agency funded the MESA Study in Chicago, Los Angeles County and surrounding area, Baltimore, St. Paul, Minn., New York City and nearby Rockland County, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina
